The Joyful Mess of Making Art

Creating art, for me, has never been about following a plan. It’s more like going in with a rough idea, giving in to the flow and seeing what happens— you let colour lead, follow the rhythm of feeling, and see where it takes you. Sometimes it’s bold and messy; other times it’s quiet and delicate. Sometimes it hits just right - others it doesn't click at all and just wont come together. But that’s where the magic lives: in the not knowing.

I love that about painting. It doesn’t demand a map, just curiosity. A colour that catches my eye, the curve of a petal, or even just a mood I’m in — is enough to set me off. From there, it’s a mix of play, exploration, and those little happy accidents that turn into something more beautiful than I could have planned.

Imperfection is where the soul sneaks in

There’s a lot of pressure in the art world (and in life!) to make things “perfect.” But honestly? Perfection is boring. The brushstrokes that go a bit astray, the unexpected way two colours blend, the texture that shows up by accident — that’s the heartbeat of the piece.

When I let go of trying to control every detail, the work feels alive. It starts to tell its own story, one that feels far more personal and layered than anything I could script. And it’s often these quirks that make a painting resonate with someone else too — because imperfection feels human, and connection lives in the human bits.

How style slowly finds you

People often ask me how I “found my style.” The truth is, it found me over time. You can’t really force it. Style shows up when you give yourself the freedom to play — to try, to fail, to follow your instincts instead of rules.

I’ve learned that the more I lean into what feels fun (and sometimes a bit scary), the more consistent my work becomes without me even trying. And the patterns that repeat — the big sweeps of colour, the impressionistic florals, the way I reach for deep inky blues and vivid pinks again and again — that’s where my style has quietly formed.

Art in your home: more than decoration

The thing about art is it’s not just about making something pretty. It’s about how it makes you feel when you live with it. A painting that bursts with colour can turn a blank wall into a joyful corner. A softer, quieter piece can bring calm to a busy space. It’s not decoration — it’s personality, mood, and story, all rolled into one.

That’s why I always say: choose art that makes you feel something. If it makes you smile, if it reminds you of a memory, if you can’t stop looking at it — that’s the one. It doesn’t need to match your cushions or follow a trend. It just needs to feel like you.

Art as a journey

Whether you’re an artist yourself, a collector, or just dipping your toes into the world of art, I think the most important thing is to enjoy the journey. Creating, curating, or simply admiring — it’s all part of the same joyful mess.

So, maybe your next step is picking up a brush just to play. Or maybe it’s finding a piece that feels like the missing puzzle piece for your home. Wherever you are, let it be about feeling, not rules. Because at the end of the day, art isn’t meant to be perfect — it’s meant to be alive!
