Sizing & Framing Guide: How to Choose the Right Fit for Your Artwork

Buying original art is such a special experience — but figuring out how to display it at home can feel a little overwhelming. How big should it be? Do you need a frame? What style works best? I’ve put together this simple guide to help you choose the perfect size and frame so your artwork shines in your space.

Choosing the Right Size

When picking art for your wall, it’s not just about what you love (although that’s the most important part!). Think about:

Your space – Is the wall large or small? Will the artwork be a focal point or part of a gallery wall?✅ Balance – Artwork that’s too small can feel lost on a big wall; too big can overwhelm. Aim for something that fills about two-thirds of the wall space above furniture.

Room style – Minimalist? Maximalist? Layered? Think about how the artwork’s size fits with your overall decor.

If you’re buying a smaller piece (like an A5 or A4 original), don’t worry! You can make it stand out by using a large mount or wide mat to add presence on the wall, or by grouping it with other works in a gallery-style display.

Framing Tips to Complement Your Art

Framing not only protects your art — it can completely transform how it looks. Here are some tips:

Go simple for bold pieces – A clean black, white, or natural wood frame lets colourful or textured art take centre stage.

Consider a mount  – If you have an art piece on paper, adding a mount can create breathing space around it, giving it a gallery feel.

Think about texture – For highly textured artwork, you might want to skip glass (or use a box frame) so the surface can really be appreciated. This is perfect for works on canvas board, and canvas stretched frames too.

Match the vibe – Rustic wood? Sleek metal? Vintage gold? Choose a frame that complements both the artwork and your room’s style.

I’m always happy to offer personal framing advice for any piece you’re considering — or to help you customise a frame to suit your space.

A Note on Ready-to-Frame Sizes

Most of my artwork on paper is created in standard sizes like A5, A4, and A3, making it easy to find affordable frames on the high street or online. But if you’d like your piece mounted or professionally framed, let me know — I can arrange it or recommend a local framer.

Framing Isn’t Just for Walls

Don’t forget, not every artwork has to be hung! Smaller pieces look beautiful displayed:

  • On a shelf or mantelpiece

  • Leaned against a wall

  • On a picture ledge mixed with books or plants
